House Bill Would Authorize Municipal Wi-Fi

Imagine sitting on a park bench, surfing the internet on your laptop.  Or checking your email from the mall.  If several PA House Members get their way, that possibility could become a reality.  House Bill 327 [html pdf], introduced earlier this month, would amend the Pennsylvania Public Utility Code to allow municipalities to install wireless Internet systems throughout the municipality.

Proponents of the bill believe that the installation of these networks would be relatively inexpensive and would encourage business development, particularly for small startup businesses for whom the cost of Internet access no longer would be a concern.  This would be a great tool for those local municipalities who have the desire and the capital to install such systems, and the General Assembly would do well to give municipalities such a tool.
